FREESTYLE WATCH SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD
Honoring Jon Harless
The 2026 Longboard Battle is proud to recognize Jon Harless with the Freestyle Watch Sportsmanship Award — celebrating a lifelong commitment to surfing, community, positivity, and the spirit of competition.
Born and raised on Florida’s Treasure Coast, Jon has been surfing for over 43 years, beginning his journey in 1983. Known for his passion in and out of the water, Jon represents everything great about Florida surf culture: dedication, humility, fairness, and stoke.
From: Jensen Beach, Florida
Local Break: Stuart Rocks
Dream Wave: Cloudbreak, Fiji
Favorite Spots: Playa Dominical, Costa Rica & Lower Trestles, California
Jon’s passions extend far beyond surfing. Whether it’s tennis, skateboarding, golf, fishing, or simply relaxing with friends and family after a long day, he embraces life with gratitude and humor.
He currently rides a variety of J7 Surfboards models including the WERP, Whatever, and Ugly Stick, while also loving Sharpeye boards. Inspired by legends like Mark “Occy” Occhilupo, Clay Marzo, Kelly Slater, and tennis icon Novak Djokovic, Jon brings intensity and creativity to everything he does.
But what truly sets Jon apart is the mindset he brings to the lineup and to life:
“Instead of seeking strength to endure life’s challenges, find humor in the journey. Laugh at the absurdities, cherish the funny moments, and appreciate the lessons learned along the way.”
Jon hopes to continue bringing a Florida surf culture rooted in:
Passion
Compassion
Competitive Drive
Fairness & Equality
His spirit perfectly aligns with our mission:
Sharing the joy of surfing with local communities
Providing scholarship opportunities & surf lessons
Protecting our beaches through cleanups
Teaching ocean safety
Hosting statewide competitions
Bringing surfers together through events, video nights & community gatherings
Thank you, Jon, for being an incredible ambassador for Florida surfing and for inspiring the next generation both in and out of the water. ![]()
