The Treasure Coast showed up in a big way for the first Family Fun Surfing Day presented by Sunrise Surf Shop and coached by Florida Surf Experience.
Mother Nature wasn’t exactly serving up beginner waves. Waveland Beach was pumping with heavy 3-5 foot shore pound for most of the day, creating challenging conditions for even experienced surfers. But if there’s one thing we learned, it’s that these Little Pirates are tougher than they look.
From the first beach introduction with Coach Ryan to the final prizes and awards, the stoke level never dropped.
Throughout the day, young surfers learned ocean awareness, surfboard knowledge, water safety, and surfing fundamentals before heading into the lineup. Surfers rotated through coaching groups while beach coaches worked on pop-ups and technique on the sand.
The conditions were challenging, but the smiles never disappeared.
When they weren’t battling waves, participants enjoyed games, prizes, food, and plenty of beachside fun with friends and family. The determination shown by these young surfers was inspiring, and every participant left with new skills, new confidence, and new memories.
One of the highlights of the day was the presentation of the Freestyle Sportsmanship Award. Congratulations to Madison Farrell, one of Jon Weazel’s talented young surfers, who earned the award and took home a brand-new Freestyle watch inspired by World Champion Caroline Marks.
We also sent one lucky Little Pirate home with a brand-new surfboard.
